Letter to the Editor of the Morning Mail - Destroying our heritageYou can read the original article at the Mornington Mail here (required you to sign up for a free membership). Well over a century ago, long before ‘‘ sustainability’’ and ‘‘ climate change’’ became key words, governments and prominent citizens with vision put aside various tracts of land around this state for parks and gardens to be enjoyed by future generations. That’s us. Bulldozing of a significant portion of such a heritage-listed property, Westerfield, south of Frankston, started last Tuesday. Alternative routes for the Peninsula Link freeway were totally ignored by this barbaric, arrogant government, the one that piped water from a depleted Murray-Darling basin in a panic created by years of inactivity. A government in bed with big-money developers that has no regard for preserving Victoria’s heritage for our children and grandchildren as they wilfully destroy historic buildings and Australian bushland with its unique wildlife. Does anybody really care? Well, brace yourselves, folks, because our esteemed planning minister now has the power to bypass any mandatory protection laws that were framed to protect our coasts, forests and parks. Indeed, he has demonstrated that he’ll do just that from now on.
